It is a singular destination that combines the Latin American identity and the European tradition. It is a bustling city, marked by contrasts. Some areas reveal its colonial past, other exhibit a strong European influence, with luxurious mansions standing among moderns skyscrapers.
There is the historical Buenos Aires that can be discovered in the neighborhoods of San Telmo and San Nicolás. At the Plaza de Mayo, the Cabildo, seat of the government during the Viceroyalty, In front of the Government Building (the Pink House), the current seat of the government and scenario of the big popular demonstrations in the country’s political life. The Manzana de las Luces is a historic block where the National College of Buenos Aires, the Church of San Ignacio, the old building of the University of Buenos Aires and other historic buildings are located. In this area you can also visit the Cathedral and some other historical churches like San Pedro Telmo, antique shops surrounding Plaza Dorrego, where every Sunday the famous “Flea Market” is installed.
Libertador Avenue is a testimony of a period of magnificence when the city wanted to imitate the large European capitals, with luxurious residences, that today hold museums and embassies. In this neighborhood, called Recoleta, there are lots of tourist sites and many have great cultural value like the National Museum of Fine Arts, The Museum of Latin Art of Buenos Aires (MALBA), the National Library, the Recoleta Cultural Center and the Palais de Glace. In this area, the visitors can find the Recoleta Cementery, built in the garden of the Basilica of Pilar in 1832, where several national heroes and outstanding figures of the country were buried. The place is surrounded by parks, restaurants and famous bars like La Biela and during the weekends art crafts can be purchased at the Fair of Plaza Francia. In Palermo neighborhood, you can visit the Planetarium and the Ecopark.
The elegant area of Puerto Madero is an evidence of the changes that time imposed upon a modern city. It is built on the remains of the old port and today it holds state-of-theart office buildings and the highest skyscrapers in the city. In this area, you can visit the Immigrants Hotel, the Frigate President Sarmiento Museum, the Bridge of the Woman and the ship-museum.
Another tourist site of cultural importance is the Corrientes Avenue. There you can find a lot of theaters like the Teatro San Martin, and numerous other sights such as the Paseo La Plaza and the Luna Park Stadium. At the intersection of the Avenue and 9 de Julio Avenue is the “Obelisco”, an emblem of the City of Buenos Aires. Near the Obelisco (only 3 blocks away) is the Teatro Colón, one of the main opera houses in the world. Beyond being able to attend a musical event, guided tours are held every day to let you know one of the concert halls with the best acoustics in the world for opera performances and symphonic concerts.
Finally the colorful neighborhood of La Boca, which is an emblematic place of the immigrants. The ride Caminito, the whole legacy of the painter Benito Quinquela Martin in the hull of the Vuelta de Rocha, its artists, museums, theaters and the stadium of Club Atlético Boca Juniors “Bombonera” are some of its main attractions.
